We have a special meeting this month with noted land surveyor and storyteller, Carl C. de Baca. Many of you will know of Carl from the numerous articles that he has published in many surveying publications including Parallax, such as Terminus, A Little Humor and What Makes a Discrepancy Material ?, just to name a few.

Carl has been a CLSA member since 1992.  Carl has served CLSA as Sac. Chapter president, Board Rep, State Treasurer and State Secretary.  He served CLSA as NSPS governor, 2 terms as Area 9 Director and served as former editor of the California Surveyor magazine.  He was awarded the Von Schmidt award in 2019 for service to CLSA and NALS (Carl is only one of three recipients of this award which has been around since 2009) .    Carl has worked in and around the Sacramento area for many years and had significant experience in surveying after the Camp, North Complex and Caldor Fires in Northern California.  He has recently relocated to Reno, Nevada to be closer to his family, but he is still involved in a few CLSA related things, particularly monument preservation.

The presentation will be a look, from the surveyor’s perspective, at the recovery of Lahaina on the island of Maui, 2 years after the devastating wildfire destroyed most of the town.  Surveying and surveyors have been and are still playing key roles in the restoration of a historic town. This presentation may produce some ‘lessons learned’ as a takeaway for the attendees.
