The Chapter meeting on November 18 was held over Zoom. The chapter was lucky enough to have Carl C. de Baca to give a presentation on the rehabilitation of the Lahaina area as it pertained to land boundaries. Carl who has done extensive surveying in California and Nevada, would not seem to be the person to talk about surveying in Hawaii. However, as the NSPS Governor for Area 9, which covers Hawaii, he had many personal relations with the surveying community there. These relations became deeper after the fires and during the rebuilding, which is still going on. I am sorry to say that the meeting was not recorded which is a loss to all of us.
The best we can do is direct readers to an article that Carl wrote about it in the American Surveyor; Rising from the Ashes. The article will give you some sense of what is going on in getting land boundaries established and recorded, even if not officially. The article also discusses how entities are providing free surveys and low-cost loans for those trying to rebuild. The article was put out in the beginning of the year, and Carl had more current and more in-depth information at the meeting. We were also lucky to have our friend Victor Rasgado on the meeting. He has been involved in the surveying and has knowledge of the survey laws in Hawaii. It was a very interesting program and discussion that was well attended.
We finished up with the business of the chapter. Please read the minutes for details about that part of the meeting.
The officers are hoping that many of you will be able to attend the Christmas Potluck this year!!
